Character.AI Review 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

By the Swipey AI editorial team · Last updated: 14 July 2026 · Reviewed against company disclosures, court filings and independent reporting

Twenty million people open Character.AI every month and stay for the better part of an hour. That number alone tells you the product works. What it doesn't tell you is that the app you'd be signing up for today looks almost nothing like the one that made Character AI famous in 2022.

Character.AI is a platform for chatting with AI-built personas — anime heroes, historical figures, moody vampires, a language tutor, or something a creator dreamed up from scratch. It went into public beta in September 2022 and now hosts north of ten million user-made characters, more than any rival gets close to. That library is still the single best reason to use it.

Who actually built this thing

Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas started Character.AI in November 2021, straight after leaving Google, where they had worked on the Meena and LaMDA chatbot projects. Shazeer's name is also on "Attention Is All You Need," the 2017 paper that gave the world the Transformer architecture almost every major AI model now runs on. The company raised $150 million in 2023 at a $1 billion valuation, and then things got strange: in August 2024, Google paid roughly $2.7 billion for a non-exclusive licence to Character.AI's technology and hired Shazeer, De Freitas and a chunk of the research team straight back. Character.AI kept operating as an independent company, now run by CEO Karandeep Anand, but the two founders who gave the product its personality went back to the company they had walked away from three years earlier.

What you actually get in 2026

The core loop hasn't changed: pick a character or build one, start talking, and the model holds a persona across the conversation. Character Calls, the voice feature, launched free back in mid-2024 and is still the easiest way to make a chat feel like a conversation rather than a text thread. Stories drops you into a scripted narrative instead of a blank chat box, Books lets you step inside classic novels alongside their characters, and a newer memory system splits into Story Memory, message Pinning, and a paid "Facts" layer that tracks details about a persona over time.

The newest addition is the strangest one. In July 2026, Character.AI launched c.ai Series — a slate of in-house microdramas, starting with a romance, a horror story and a survival thriller — where the twist is that once an episode ends, users over 18 can keep talking to its characters and steer new scenes. CEO Karandeep Anand told reporters the point is to turn a finished episode into an ongoing relationship the platform owns, rather than a one-off view.

The part the marketing doesn't lead with

Two things are pushing a chunk of the user base toward the exits. First, monetisation got aggressive fast: full-screen ads landed inside conversations in February 2026, and a new "Charms" currency now gates extra swipe regenerations for free users, capped at roughly 400 a day. Second, content moderation has tightened hard since 2023. Character.AI runs a strict no-explicit-content policy that applies identically whether you pay or not, and creative roleplay that used to sail through now gets interrupted with disclaimers or blocked outright. Neither change is unreasonable in isolation. Together, inside about a year, they have visibly annoyed a lot of long-time users, and it shows in the numbers: monthly actives have slipped from roughly 28 million at their mid-2024 peak to about 20 million now.

Worth knowing before you sign up. Character.AI has also spent 2025 and 2026 dealing with lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny over how the platform affected some of its teenage users, which led to a full ban on open-ended chat for anyone under 18. We cover exactly what changed and why in our safety breakdown.

Who Character.AI actually suits

If you want to roleplay with a character from a show you love, practise a language against a patient tutor persona, or just browse a huge library of other people's creations, nothing else on the market comes close on size. If what you actually want is an adult companion you built yourself, with no filter standing between you and the conversation, that's a different product — which is exactly the gap Swipey AI is built to fill. Our side-by-side comparison goes through the difference in more detail.

The verdict

Character AI in 2026 is bigger, better funded and considerably more restrictive than it was two years ago. It's still the easiest way to find an interesting character for free, and the voice and memory features are genuinely good. But the ads, the Charms system and the tightening filter are real costs, and if adult, unfiltered chat is what you're after, you'll hit that wall on day one regardless of which plan you're on.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns Character.AI?

Character Technologies, Inc. still operates Character.AI independently. Google licensed its technology for roughly $2.7 billion in 2024 and hired back co-founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, but the two companies remain separate.

Is Character.AI free to use?

Yes, with unlimited messaging and the full character library. The free tier now shows full-screen ads and caps extra swipe regenerations through a Charms system; the paid c.ai+ plan removes both.

Does Character.AI allow NSFW content?

No. Its content policy blocks explicit material for every user regardless of subscription, and moderation has become noticeably stricter since 2023.
